All employees who are not self-employed and who reside in Switzerland are, regardless of their nationality, insured against unemployment, provided they meet certain requirements.

Contribution periods

A claim to benefits exists if at least 12 months of employment can be documented within the last two years prior to apllication, the so-called qualifying period. This qualifying period can be extended if parental leave time for children unter the age of 10 can be documented.
Citizens of EU/EFTA countries can have contribution periods they earned in an EU/EFTA country counted if they were engaged in employment for which contribution were required after their arrival in Switzerland.

Non-contributory periods

  • Training, illness, accident, maternity leave
  • Employment period of more than one year spent outside of an EU/EFTA country for Swiss citizens

Persons seeking employment are insured free of contribution requirements after the following events

  • Divorce
  • Separation of marriage
  • Death of a spouse
  • End of a disability insurance pension if the event occured no more than one year ago an the place of residence when the event ocurred was in Switzerland.
